Save on Your Council Rates

Save on Your Council Rates: Find Out If You Qualify for a Rates Rebate!

If you’re struggling with your council rates, a rates rebate could provide some relief. If you qualify, you may receive a reduction on your rates for the period between 1 July 2024 and 30 June 2025.

What is a Rates Rebate?

A rates rebate is a reduction in your council rates, available to those who meet certain eligibility criteria, including income and property ownership. The amount of the rebate depends on your household income, number of dependants, and total council rates.

How are Rates Rebates Calculated?

The calculation takes into account:

  1. Your income – How much you earn before tax.
  2. Your dependants – The people living with you and dependent on you financially.
  3. Your rates bill – The total amount of local council rates, including water rates.

Even if you don’t meet all the criteria, you might still be eligible, so it’s worth checking.

Who is Eligible for a Rates Rebate?

To qualify, the property must be your usual residence on 1 July 2024, and you must be listed as the ratepayer in your council’s rating information database. Special situations include:

• If you live in a retirement village, owner-occupier flat, or a trust-owned property, you may still qualify.
• You cannot claim a rebate for properties used for commercial purposes (e.g., rental properties, businesses, holiday homes) or if you own more than one property.

How to Calculate Your Eligibility

The local council will check:

  1. Your household income – Add up all earnings before tax for you and any joint homeowners/partners for the period 1 April 2023 to 31 March 2024.
  2. Your dependants – Count how many dependants lived with you on 1 July 2024 (excluding your spouse or partner).

What Counts as Household Income?

Household income includes wages, government benefits, pensions, self-employment income, interest, dividends, and overseas income. For a full list, refer to the application form.
